5 TIPS: Professional Photography

There’s a time when every artist needs a helping hand in terms of photography. Here are some ways to use professional photos to improve your brand. Hint: this applies even if photography is your chosen medium!

Hire a photographer for a ‘studio session’

This is a wonderful way to share your studio and processes with your audience. Everyone loves to peek into artist studios, and these images are essential for building your brand. They can be used on social media and on your website to help share your message.

Have professional photos taken of your work

I’ve already given you a guide for taking good quality artwork photos with your smartphone. [here] But there are times when you need a pro! Incorporating a figure (or hands & feet!) in the shot can help share the scale of the work. Look at these amazing examples of how you can show artwork off using stunning high-quality professional photos.

Hire a photographer for a headshot

Put your face out there! People want to see it. If you can get a photo taken in your space or surrounded by your artwork, even better.

Hire a photographer to shoot your work on site

Many of these photos were taken at the Toronto Artist Project. Marina Dempster has been hired by many artists to shoot at this event, and the results are incredible! We get to see the artists doing their other ‘work’ - sales! These photos are wonderful for use on social media or artist websites as they show scale, and show off how desirable your work is.

Use a quality app to create digital install pictures

There are many great apps for making digital renderings, and you tend to get what you pay for. I’ve used Artplacer and Artrooms, but feel free to research others. These are a great way to help show clients how your work will look on the wall, so I love using them.

Here are some photographers that I’ve worked with personally, who can capture these special images. I’m happy to hear from other talented photographers and add to the list!
