My Website Templates Aren’t for Everyone…They Are Just For Artists
I've spent roughly 10 years helping artists build websites.
Naturally, I wanted to recommend the built-in Squarespace templates. They're attractive, easy to use, and Squarespace remains my favourite website platform for artists. In fact, I've been recommending it since 2015.
But after working with hundreds of artists, I kept running into the same problem. The templates weren't built for the way artists actually use websites.
An artist website isn't just a website. It's a portfolio, a gallery, a sales tool, a professional résumé, an exhibition archive, and often an online store. The needs are different from a restaurant, consultant, or small business.
I found myself making the same adjustments over and over again.
Artists need artwork displayed without awkward cropping. They need portfolio layouts that feel like galleries rather than product catalogues. They need clear navigation for exhibitions, artist statements, and collections. They need mobile experiences that make artwork look exceptional. Most importantly, they need a site that feels professional to collectors, galleries, curators, and jurors.
Eventually I stopped looking for the perfect Squarespace template and started building my own.
My templates are based on what I've learned from twenty years working in the art world and helping artists sell work online. They aren't theoretical designs. They're built from real artist websites, real collector behaviour, and real questions artists ask every day.
Every template includes features I consistently found myself adding to client websites:
Portfolio and shop layouts designed specifically for artwork
Mobile-first presentation
Customizations that prevent artwork from being cropped
Artist-focused page structures
Clean, professional design that lets the artwork lead
Optional e-commerce features for artists who sell online
Built-in flexibility for exhibitions, blogs, events, and collections
The goal isn't to make your website look like everyone else's. The goal is to give you a professional foundation that has already solved the problems most artists don't know they'll encounter until they're halfway through building a site.
A professionally designed template can save dozens of hours of frustration, help you avoid costly mistakes, and get your work online faster.
If you've been staring at a blank Squarespace site wondering where to begin, don't start from scratch.
Start with a framework that's already been proven to work for artists.
