Best platform for artist websites in 2023

I am asked this question a lot! I’ve been designing websites for over a decade and have dabbled in all of the most popular online platforms (Wix, Weebly, Forum, Shopify, Wordpress, etc). Through this experience I’ve developed a clear favourite, and I’m happy to provide my reasons why.

Basically, this is what I believe artists need the most in their website: The ability to update (stale websites don’t sell art!), a social media feed that gets pulled in (Instagram scroll-bar), clean designs that don’t allow too many font or design options, e-commerce capability (for some), and add-ons like email marketing.

Squarespace is the clear winner for me

  • Version 7.1 (the newest) is essentially all built on the same template but users can easily customize the look based on their colour schemes and font packs

  • My clients are ALWAYS able to do their own updates and keep their site looking fresh

  • It’s easy to start with a basic site and add e-commerce later if that suits you (works well for most artists!)

  • The site is economical, and the business plan gives you everything you need.

  • Easy Email Campaign marketing tools that can be added if needed

  • The overall look is clean, on-trend and (here’s an important part) Squarespace makes is kind of difficult to make the site look ugly. They do this by limiting font options colour palettes…so even the most wild designers can get reined in just a little bit.

More information that may help as you decide if Squarespace is the platform for you:

+ What technical ability do I need

Not much. There is no custom coding, no need to know HTML. I provide step-by-step instructions. It would help put the site together swiftly if you had organized folders of your artwork before starting. I think it's worth a try - and if you feel you need assistance we can book a 1:1 call and I'll show you how to maneuver the site.

+ How will I learn to make updates on my own?

When I build a website for a client, I take their technical ability into account. I can build something simple, or complex. Regardless, I teach my clients how to use their site through simple videos. Squarespace also has a wonderful collection of help tutorials on their website that can show anyone how to excel on the platform. One of my favourite features, however, is the Squarespace app. Using the app, you can make almost any website updates you need right from there.

+ But everyone's talking about Shopify...

Squarespace has been my go-to since 2015. I believe it offers good value, is friendly towards varying technical abilities, and shows off artwork well. Squarespace has built-in commerce capabilities if you'd like to make yours an online shop. Shopify is geared more towards e-commerce stores with super high volume, and I don't find it to be as user-friendly.

+ How much does site hosting cost?

When you're ready to make your site live, you’ll need to subscribe to a website plan. I recommend choosing the Business plan (around $18/m USD) so you can utilize extra features like pop-up messages, and add e-commerce if you need it.

+ Can I use a custom domain?

Once you build your site, you can either connect your existing domain name (your www address) or buy a domain through Squarespace (typically $20-$30 per year).

I hope this has helped you decide if Squarespace is right for you.
